Welcome to the Spittelberg!

Welcome to the "village in the city", Vienna’s second-largest pedestrian zone with well preserved historical buildings and idyllic squares – just a few minutes‘ walk from the city centre. Be it summer or winter, here you find a unique part of town without the usual traffic noise or exhaust fumes, just the romantic, fascinating atmosphere of historical cobble-stoned streets.

From Spring to Autumn, find a table in one of our restaurants‘ guest gardens to catch up with friends or simply take in the relaxed atmosphere. And of course the cold season brings us one of the most famous and popular Christmas markets in Vienna:  "Spittelberg Christmas Market" is well-known for the quality of its arts and crafts, frequented for its unique blend of creativity and entertainment, and loved for its homely atmosphere.

Certainly Spittelberg is full of delights, but it is also a place rich in culture. The „Theater am Spittelberg“ " was newly refurbished from top to bottom this year and regularly draws thousands of visitors during its season (March – October). Take a look at the current program! The cinema „Filmhaus am Spittelberg“ shows quality movies, and all over Spittelberg you will find an inspiring range of specialist shops: African art, leather crafts, original fashion from local designers, and much more!

For many centuries, Spittelberg was a lively city suburb. It has retained a little of its typical Viennese history, the "Schnepfen" [broads] of Spittelberg, the "Bierhäuslmenscher" [beer house girls] who lured visitors into the tiny local taverns on "Venusberg". The "village" holds many stories, there is no need to track them down at "Mordgassel" [Murder Lane] or look for them in "Leichenhofgasse" [Corpse Court Lane].

Simply come for a visit, rest a while on a bench under the linden trees on the main Platz’l, and they will come find you – the stories of Spittelberg. Where fun meets culture.
