Opening the Cultural Summer Festival at Spittelberg 2010

A stroll through the narrow, winding lanes of Spittelberg will take you through charming squares lined with trees and past house facades which have hardly changed in centuries. This is the scene for small taverns with inviting guest gardens in the summer, and of course the well-known Christmas market in winter.

You can sense the history of Spittelberg, and imagine the atmosphere when this was still Vienna’s saucy entertainment suburb and "Red Light District". Whether you are just setting out to explore, or are long familiar with the extraordinary character of this "village in the city", we have something special to offer you.

This summer, for the first time, we are thrilled to introduce the Cultural Festival at Spittelberg.

On 30th June, the "Theater am Spittelberg" will open after complete refurbishment and provide high quality entertainment until well into October. An enrichment for Vienna’s theatre scene, for the many foreign visitors to the city, a wonderful summer celebration.

The "Filmhaus am Spittelberg", the cinema at Spittelberggasse 3, also offers a fresh and entertaining summer programme. Look out for the daily movie showing under the theme "Qualität im Grätz´l" [local quality]. Several art galleries have assembled summer-themed exhibitions, others show the newest generation of Spittelberg’s "Schnepfen" [girls] or carry you far away with exotic African artwork.

Lena Hoschek, a renowned Austrian fashion designer, presents summer collections in her studio in Gutenberggasse, and local restaurants invite artists to display their work on their walls… We hope to welcome you at Spittelberg soon to see for yourself what summer with us is all about! We wish you a pleasant, relaxing and inspiring summer in Vienna.
